SIZE THEM UP
Compare different properties of objects.
Materials
- Size Them Up (PDF)
- Scissors
- Pen/pencil
- Pad of paper
- Markers or crayons
Directions
- Print out the Size Them Up (PDF). Hand out safety scissors or supervise with regular scissors. Tell your child to cut along the dotted lines that surround each picture. Once she has cut out her images, have her glue the objects on a sheet of paper in order from smallest on the left to largest on the right. If you do not want to use scissors, you can have her write the number 1 next to the smallest object, 2 next to the second smallest, and so on.
- Once your child has completed the activity, review the order together. If you are able, show her the objects in real life to help her understand the difference in sizes. Ask your child what kind of objects they are: people-made or natural?
- Have your child color in the pictures.
Take It Further
Look around the house for similar objects in different sizes. Have your child order the identical or similar objects from smallest to largest. Examples of items to put in order:
- baby spoon, teaspoon, tablespoon, serving spoon
- nested objects such as plastic cups, dolls, orboxes
- building blocks
- pillows
- family shoes
- balls
