Materials:
Feng Shui Ideas (listed below)
Directions:
Introduce your child to the Chinese word: Feng Shui (fung shway- means wind and water); chi (chee- means good energy). So, what is Feng Shui? This ancient concept is the Chinese way of bringing "chi," or good energy, into your home. It's about bringing balance and harmony into one's life; something that everyone can benefit from!
Now, talk about the following "child-friendly" Feng Shui ideas:
- Conserve water by taking a shower instead of a bath
- Don't let sink water run while brushing teeth or grooming.
- Discover what foods are locally grown each season. Eat healthy by choosing foods that haven't been processed or stored for long periods.
- Get close to nature by feeding birds, taking nature walks, or riding a bike. Did you know that stroking a pet can relieve stress? It's true!
- Be generous by sharing unwanted toys, clothes, and play equipment.
- Display happy family pictures around the house.
- Clear clutter from spaces.
- Place inspirational pictures and thoughts around the house.
Talk about It: Ask your child to make connections with the concepts of Feng Shui by asking: Why is saving water so important? What foods are grown where we live? How do you feel when you hear the birds sing or spend time with a pet?
Take it Further: Encourage your child to put his/her new understanding about the concept of Feng Shui to work by cleaning out closets and storage for unused or outgrown toys, clothes, or play equipment. Donate goods to local organizations or other children that could use or enjoy.
With a Group: Enhance your group's environment by using these Feng Shui ideas:
- Help children create picture displays.
- Hang bulletin boards filled with photos of family members and friends enjoying time together.
- Add a small water fountain.
- Take turns bringing a pet to enjoy and learn about.
- Organize nature walks or group bike rides.
