Activity: Share the Rhythm...SIS-BOOM-BAH!
Some of the most memorable times you and your child will treasure will be shared doing the most simple things. Using imagination and creative expression through music is a great way for you and your child to share time together.

Directions:
Use these ideas to create homemade instruments for some simple musical fun:
- Punch holes in bottle caps. String together on wire and begin shaking!
- Run a pipe cleaner through an empty thread spool. Put a small bell on each end. Twist ends together for a finger-sized jingle bell.
- Put two paper plates together, leaving an opening large enough to put dry beans in the opening. Close opening and shake-it-up with this fun tambourine.
- Place beans, nuts, acorns, pennies, etc., into an empty coffee can or carton. Close opening securely. Shake, rattle, and roll!
- Use sandpaper to make a raspy rhythm on an old piece of wood.
- Don't forget that spoons and pans make melodious clanking instruments!
Encourage your child to play to the rhythm of favorite tunes and model different rhythms to build important listening skills! Who needs high-tech toys when you can help your child experience fun homemade entertainment with common household objects?

- Listen to many genres, or types, of music together.
- Allow your child to take music lessons, or take lessons with your child.
- Encourage participation in a children's music organization.
- Attend the symphony and local music festival.
With a Group: Invite local individuals to come and share information about their musical background, instrument of choice, and talents. Encourage children to ask questions. Then gather up any available instruments or help children make homemade instruments for an impromptu session of creative and original musical expression!
