Activity: Responsi-mobile

Help your child identify responsible behavior at home and school (or daycare) by identifying, organizing, and gluing pictures on a paper plate mobile.

Materials:

  • 2 large paper plates
  • family oriented magazines; old books; or coloring books that can be cut up
  • glue
  • scissors
  • hole punch
  • bread twist, ribbon, or yarn

Directions:
Help your child identify pictures that show friends and family acting in responsible ways at home and school. Organize and glue pictures on two different paper plates; one for responsibility at home and the other for responsibility at school (or daycare, etc.). After pictures have been glued, attach the two plates (one of top of the other) by using a hole punch and bread twist, ribbon, or yarn. Option: Add another plate to the mobile showing responsible behavior with pets!

  • I'm Responsible at Home! Have your child cut out pictures from magazines that show people being responsible in their bedroom, kitchen, family room, bathroom, and yard, etc.
  • I'm Responsible at School! (or daycare, etc.) Cut out picutures from magazines that show friends or classmates acting in a responsible way during learning time, playtime, center time, quiet time, lunchtime, music time, etc.

Talk about It: Ask your child to name ways that he/she acts responsibly at home and school. Then share ideas about how a responsible person might act toward family, friends, pets, and property.

Take it Further: Use these ideas to help build responsible behavior:

  • Invite your child to help with kitchen duties before and after meals.
  • Include your child in safe home improvement projects.
  • Encourage your child to take responsibility for care of the family pet(s).

With a Group: Give your group a chance to bloom in responsibility by bringing nature inside during cold winter months by growing an indoor winter garden. Grow small container plants using a plant light and provide charts for children to record planting, watering, and feeding routines. Give each child routine opportunities to participate and contribute in a responsible way to the winter garden.
