Activity: Everyone "Kneads" Kindness
Good friends are kind and considerate. Help your child show someone special how loved they are by baking them some homemade Honey Buttermilk Bread from this tried and true recipe!
Materials:
Measuring tools, bowls, cup towels, and the following ingredients:
- 1 pkg. yeast
- 3 cups flour
- 1 1/2 t. salt
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
- 1 T. butter
- 4 T. honey
- 1/2 cup warm water
Directions:
Begin by helping your child name and become familiar with measurement tools and ingredients. Combine dry ingredients first. Then lightly knead bread, dusting with flour. Place in a buttered bread pan. Bake bread at 350 degrees for approximately 50 minutes until lightly browned. Cool, cut into squares, and share the delicious kindnesss with someone special.
Talk about It: Ask your child to name people that they consider kind and considerate. Encourage your child to identify characteristics that make these special people who they are. Then share with each other kind and considerate characteristics that you both admire about each other.
Take it Further: Talk about the meaning of the word "consideration." Then read and enjoy the classic children's story, The Little Red Hen. Discuss how the story's farm animals could have been more considerate of their friend, the Little Red Hen. After reading, list some considerate (or good deeds) things that could be done for a friend or family member.
With a Group: Read The Little Red Hen to your group. Then have some math fun by grouping dry grain ingredients like corns, beans, rice, noodles, etc. Take notice of sizes, shapes, colors, and textures. Then have students glue ingredients on individual poster boards that have outlined images of their name initials or some kind of farm animal, preferably a hen. When finished, organize an art gallery to display each work of art.
