It's important for children to develop personable social skills. Learning good manners, consideration and respect for others early in life will lay the foundation for meaningful relationships as your child matures. The following activities nurture:

Introduce words from The Little Red Hen: bread, cat, duck, cottage, dog, goose, hen, and kneaded to your child verbally and in writing. Encourage your child to express understanding of these words. Prompt your child to make story predictions from book illustrations. Discuss the meaning of "consideration." Then read and enjoy the classic, The Little Red Hen. Discuss how the story's farm animals could have been more considerate of their friend, the Little Red Hen. After reading, list some considerate things that could be done for a friend or family member.

Good friends are considerate friends. Help your child show someone special how loved they are by baking them some homemade Honey Buttermilk Bread from this tried and true recipe! First discuss the measurement tools and ingredients that will be used.

  • Ingredients: 1 pkg. Yeast, 3 cups flour, 1 1/2 t. salt, 3/4 cup buttermilk, 4 T. honey, 1 T. butter, 1/2 cup warm water
  • Lightly knead bread, dusting with flour. Place in a buttered bread pan. Bake bread at 350 degrees for approximately 50 minutes until lightly browned.
Cool, cut into squares, and share with someone loved, admired, and respected!

With a Group:
Read The Little Red Hen. Then have some math fun by grouping dry grain ingredients like corns, beans, rice, noodles, etc. Take notice of sizes, shapes, colors, and textures before using the ingredients to fill in an outlined image of a fancy hen. Create colorful picture by gluing dry ingredients to poster board. When finished, organize gallery of original "Clucky Art" masterpieces.
