Site usage tips

Here are some tips to help you optimize your child’s use of the site.

Before playing:

  • Ensure that you have installed the latest Internet browsers. You may need to download the latest versions from one of the following sites: Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Netscape, Safari.
  • See the Game Descriptions and Level Manager, sections to understand how the games work: they were all designed so that children can play alone or with a grownup, with difficulty levels that adapt automatically to their individual skills.
  • See the Site Map to find your way through the site with ease. Then, you can let your child find his/her own way through and be there to provide guidance as needed.

While playing:

  • Supervise your child when he/she is exploring the site as children may have difficulty moving the mouse properly. You may consider getting a smaller, ergonomic mouse, designed for little hands.
  • Use the activity to talk to your child, have a conversation and ask questions to make sure that he/she is interested in the game and understands its objectives. By expressing an opinion on the content presented, the child develops self-awareness, personality and imagination.
  • Be flexible: your supervision can reassure your child and you can help him/her out if necessary, but do not take over the game. Let him/her decide and direct the game as he/she chooses, make mistakes and figure them out. You will have the chance to play yourself, as the games are designed to be played alone (by one child) or by two people (one child and one grownup).
  • Don’t worry that a game will be too difficult (or easy) for your child’s abilities because a level manager will analyze decisions, errors and successful actions and will automatically adapt the game accordingly. For more details, see Level Manager.
  • Consider the site as an exploration process, a voyage of discovery with no real beginning or end. Encourage your child to use his/her own ideas about it, express options and preferences, and make comments.
