Custom Rain Gear
Episode # 161. Umbrella
In a flat, rectangle-shaped box, the children give the Storypeople an umbrella. Mr. Man uses the umbrella to shield himself from the rain. The others come along and join Mr. Man under the umbrella, but by the time Grandpappa arrives, there isn't enough room. Each time someone tries to squeeze in, someone else is forced out. The children solve the problem by giving Grandpappa a rain hat, raincoat, and rain boots. Now everyone has a way to stay dry.

Directions
In the program, Grandpappa dons his rain gear. You can help your child make his rain gear more fun by letting them customize it.

At a hardware or automotive store, purchase reflective tape. If possible, let your child pick the color or purchase multiple colors. Cut the tape into strips of varying lengths. Then let your child use the tape to decorate the back of his raincoat and/or rain boots.

Once the rain gear is decorated, you might play a race game to see who can get in and out of their rain gear the quickest.

You might also follow up by doing some research in the library, on the Internet, or just looking around your city to see what kinds of jobs require people to wear rain coats or boots (e.g. fire fighting, fishing, etc.)

Talk About It
While viewing the Umbrella episode, you might start a conversation by asking your child: "If you were in Storyworld, how would you help Grandpappa stay dry?"

As you talk about the things on screen, you can help expand your child's vocabulary by alternating the words you use with their synonyms. In the Umbrella episode you might say that Grandpappa has put on a raincoat, a rain slicker, or his rain gear.
