Directions
In a visit to a zoo, park, farm, website, or library, show your child animals who have webbed feet, like ducks or penguins. Help her notice how the webbing helps them move in water and is not as helpful on land. Together, pretend to be ducks or penguins. How do you move? Waddle from one end of the room to the other. Then walk from one end of the room to the other. Which is easier? Which is faster?
With older children, you might also go swimming and let them try out a pair of flippers for themselves. (Very young children may not have the muscle control or strength in their legs to use flippers).
Talk About It
While viewing the Flippers episode, you might start a conversation by asking your child: "What kinds of animals have you seen with flippers (webbed feet)? Where do they live?"
As you talk about the things on screen, you can help expand your child's vocabulary by alternating the words you use with their synonyms. In the Flippers episode you might describe the way that Brother and Sister move as walking or as waddling.
