Directions
Grandmamma and Grandpappa have a very large hot dog. With your child, make your own very large sandwich. Use the sides of a box as bread. Out of construction paper, make the items that might go in your sandwich. Encourage your child to be creative. Who is the sandwich for? Would a very large sandwich be for a giant or a dinosaur? What might they like in a sandwich? What kind of bread would they prefer? Together, make up a story about the sandwich and who is going to eat it.
At lunch time, invite your child to help you make a real sandwich. Next time you are in the grocery store, encourage your child to notice and learn the names of all the different types of bread.
Talk About It
While viewing the Hot Dog episode, you might start a conversation by asking your child: "If that was your hot dog, what would you put on it? Who would you share it with? If you put condiments on your hot dog and you squeeze too hard, what happens?"
As you talk about the things on screen, you can help expand your child's vocabulary by alternating the words you use with their synonyms. In the Hot Dog episode you might describe the food as a hot dog or a frank or frankfurter. You might also introduce the vocabulary word condiment to describe the things that people put on hot dogs (like ketchup, mustard, or relish).
