Playing with Lines
Episode # 110. Painting the Fence

The Boohbahs slide their feet in interesting lines, pausing to point their toes, and rock from side to side. And Auntie finds her own lines when she uses the yellow paint and paintbrush that the children have given her to paint a fence.

Directions
Draw a line on a piece of paper and invite your child to copy it. Help your child name the line as "horizontal," "vertical," or "diagonal." Once your child can copy a straight line, be more creative. See if she can copy a zig zag or a right angle. Then switch roles and let your child draw a line that you copy.

You might also draw a fence and show your child how the fence is made up of horizontal, diagonal, and vertical lines. What other kinds of things can you draw with lines? Try doing a drawing one line at a time and letting your child guess what it is before adding the next line.

You could also follow up your drawing game by pointing out real-life things that are made up of straight lines. Make the search into a game by seeing how many things your child can find as you go through the daily routine. Some possibilities might include window frames, bookshelves, striped shirts, grocery carts, fences, etc.

Talk About It
While viewing the Painting the Fence episode, you might start a conversation by asking your child: If you could choose a color to paint the fence, what color would you paint it? I wonder why people build fences? What would you use a fence for?

As you talk about the things on screen, you can help expand your child's vocabulary by alternating the words you use with their synonyms. In the Painting the Fence episode, Auntie carries her paint in a bucket or a pail.
