Between the 1892 and 1924, some 16 million immigrants passed
through the Ellis Island immigration station on their way to a new
life in the United States. Many of these immigrants came as
families, but millions arrived by themselves. In either case, the process of entering a new country
could be a terrifying experience. Immigration officials were always
on the lookout for the sick, the mentally retarded, the politically
radical, and the criminal. In the end, only two or three out of 100
immigrants were turned back. But during long hours in the waiting
rooms, immigrants had a lot of time to worry.
