Arthur is the star of the show. His full name is Arthur Timothy Read, and he is meant to be a sort of "everykid." That is, every child can relate to his frustrations, hopes, successes, and failures. The most important thing about Arthur is that he actively explores the world around him. |

Baby Kate is the youngest member of the Read family. As an infant, she makes messes and odd noises. Through her, Arthur and D.W. learn how to be good older siblings. |

Binky Barnes is nine years old, and is repeating the third grade. He's a big guy with a "tough kid" image. He has a softer side that he tries to hide, but his interests are wonderfully diverse: everything from monster flicks to classical ballet. |

Brain (whose real name is Alan) is a friendly kid who takes his enormous intellect in stride. While he's smart, he's not a "know-it-all." He has a great interest in sports, and is especially skilled at soccer. |

Buster Baxter is Arthur's best friend. He's a sociable kid who loves eating and telling jokes, and has a hard time motivating himself to do homework. He is an only child who lives with his mother, Bitzi. Buster has asthma, but it doesn't stop him from being active. |

Dad (Mr. Read) is Arthur's father. He runs a catering business out of the Read home. He and Mrs. Read are supportive, thoughtful people who take an interest in what their kids are doing. Like many parents, they are working to maintain a balance between their home life and their careers. |

D.W. (short for Dora Winifred) is Arthur's little sister. She's precocious, independent, and a little dramatic. While she loves to bug Arthur, she is also very loyal to him. It is through Arthur and D.W. that the show explores the challenges of sibling relationships. |

Fern enjoys language, poetry, and music. Although often quiet, Fern has the spirit of an entertainer, and every now and then she lets it out. |

Francine is an explorer and a doer. She's sometimes overly confident and competitive, but she is a good and loyal friend. She loves sports and playing drums. Unlike her best friend, Muffy, Francine's family is of modest means. |

George is a friendly kid who can be a bit shy. When he's uncomfortable, he speaks through Wally, his wooden dummy. George has dyslexia, and prefers working with his hands to reading and writing. |

Mom (Mrs. Read) is Arthur's mother. She has her own accounting practice. She and Mr. Read are supportive, thoughtful people who take an interest in what their kids are doing. Like many parents, they are working to maintain a balance between their home life and their careers. |

Muffy Crosswire likes being in charge. She comes from a very wealthy family, and is used to getting her own way. Sometimes she has difficulty understanding other people's perspectives, but she can be a great friend. |

Pal is Arthur's dog. Through him, Arthur gains responsibility and companionship. |

Prunella is in the fourth grade, and a year older than most of the other kids. A little quirky and sensitive, she can also be very sweet. She often reminds the other kids that she's older and wiser, and is very generous with advice. |

Ratburn is the third grade teacher at Lakewood Elementary. He's tough, but fair and enthusiastic. While the kids may groan about homework assignments, they generally enjoy his class. |

Sue Ellen is a well-traveled kid with lots of stories to tell. She takes karate, and is very creative. Honest and fair-minded, she gets along well with the other kids. |

Thora is Arthur's grandmother (Dad's mother). She and Grandpa Dave (Mom's father) are devoted grandparents. Through them, the show explores intergenerational relationships. |

Tommy and Timmy Tibble are preschool twins who sometimes play a little too rough. They're generally good kids, but they possess an exhausting overabundance of raw energy. They live with their loving grandmother. |
