Magnet Mania
Use magnets to "fish" for letters

Materials
  • marker
  • paper clips
  • paper "fish"
  • rulers, unsharpened pencils, or chopsticks
  • scissors
  • small magnets
  • string
Directions
Take your children on a magnetic fishing expedition!
  1. Set up: Tie a magnet to one end of a string. Attach the other end to a "fishing pole" (e.g., a ruler, an unsharpened pencil, a chopstick). Cut fish shapes out of paper and write a letter of the alphabet on each one. (Make sure there are enough letters for each child to have one.) Attach paper clips to the paper fish.
  1. Go fishing: Call out letters and ask your children to fish for them. When finished playing, store this "alphabet fishing pond" for later use.
Take It Further
Try some other fun magnet activities:
  • Make refrigerator magnets by decorating oak tag shapes and attaching a magnetic strip to the back.
  • Provide objects that kids can pick up with magnets. (Note: Remind children not to use magnets near a computer.)
  • Supply magnetic letters and metal cookie sheets so children can try some magnetic spelling.
