Let's Dance!
Learn simple dances to familiar tunes
Materials
- dance music from different eras and cultures
- music for Skip to My Lou and La Raspa (Mexican Hat Dance)
Directions
Let your children dance freely to different types of music, then show them some simple dances.
- Warm up: Play a variety of music and allow your children to dance to each piece. Encourage them to change their movements when the music changes.
- Skip to My Lou: Teach this simple dance to the tune of Skip to my Lou.
- As you sing the chorus, stand in a circle and clap hands. (If it's just you and a child, stand facing each other.)
- As you sing the verses, have everyone hold hands and walk into the circle. Raise joined hands as you all meet in the center, then back up to your original position while lowering joined hands. Repeat. (If it's just you and a child, hold hands and walk toward each other, then away from each other.)
- La Raspa: Teach this simple dance to the tune of La Raspa (Mexican Hat Dance).
- Have children stand with one foot in front of the other. Next, have them hop and change feet. They switch feet three times, and then pause before repeating.
- Partners link arms and skip around each other in one direction. They then change arms, and skip in the opposite direction. Repeat.
Take It Further
Invite friends and family members to teach folk or other popular dances to your children.
