Fern's Slumber Party
Investigate Cookies
Play detective while baking cookies

Materials
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 4 egg whites
  • bowl
  • cookie sheets
  • hand-held eggbeater
Directions
Good detectives know how to observe details and recognize cause and effect. Use this cooking project to help your children develop these skills and have some food fun.
  1. Beat: Separate four eggs. Place the whites in a clear bowl, and let your children take turns beating the egg whites. Ask them to predict how the egg whites will change.
  1. Mix: When the egg whites are stiff, beat in one cup of sugar and one teaspoon vanilla until glossy.
  1. Bake: Place spoonfuls of meringue on cookie sheets, and bake for about 45 minutes at 250 degrees.
  1. Eat: Enjoy the cookies!
Talk About It
Have your children describe what happened to the egg whites when they were beaten, and let them hypothesize the reason for the change. When the cookies go into the oven, ask your children to predict how the heat of the oven will affect the mixture.

Take It Further
Have your children use cotton swabs and lemon juice to write or draw a hidden message to someone in the family. The image can be read by holding the lemon juice message near a lit light bulb.
