Play follow-the-leader games

Directions
Young children learn by imitating, and follow-the-leader games can be lots of fun. Try these ideas:
- Body Rhythms: Sit on the floor with your children. Slap your thighs and clap your hands in a simple pattern. Have your children repeat your pattern. For variety, switch to animal sounds: woof-woof-meow. Or try body-part patterns, saying as you tap: head-shoulders-shoulders.
- Mirror Me: Older children may be ready to play a mirror game with a partner. Players face each other. One player is the leader, slowly performing movements like crossing arms, scratching head, touching nose, etc. At the same time, the other player imitates the leader's movements, just like in a mirror.
Take It Further
Help your children recreate patterns you build with blocks, felt shapes, colored stickers on paper, etc. You can also play this kind of game by making musical patterns using simple rhythm instruments.
