Ice Ideas
Experiment with ice

Materials
  • ice cubes
  • juices (different kinds)
  • paper cups
  • pieces of thread
  • plastic spoons
  • salt
Directions
Explore the properties of ice with these ideas:
  1. Ice cube trick: Teach your children this trick to show their friends. Give each child an ice cube and a piece of thread. Can they use the thread to pick up the cube (without creating a loop)? Show them how to do it: Sprinkle an ice cube with salt and place the thread on top. The salt will temporarily melt the ice, which will then re-freeze over the thread. When you pick up the thread, it will lift the ice cube!
  1. Popsicle treats: Ask your children: What sorts of desserts are kept in the freezer? Make popsicles together. Have each child choose a juice to pour into a small paper cup. Freeze for about one hour, and then place a plastic spoon in the center of each cup. Freeze until solid, then peel away the cup and eat!
Talk About It
Ask your children if they can think of different ways in which people use ice. For example: to keep food fresh, to figure skate or play hockey, to create sculptures, to tend injuries, to build igloos, to keep drinks cool, etc. Show them pictures, if possible.

Take It Further
Put ice cubes in the sink or tub, and provide pieces of things like fabric and aluminum foil. Which materials best protect children's hands from the cold as they handle the ice cubes?
