Food Pyramid
Create a nutrition chart

Materials
  • art supplies
  • child-safe scissors
  • glue
  • magazines with pictures of foods
  • paper (sheet and a large triangle)
Directions
Help your children develop an awareness of nutritious foods while they learn some basic charting skills.
  1. Prep: Create a food pyramid on a large paper triangle. Be sure to include all of the food groups (grains, fruits, vegetables, milk, meat, and fats/sweets). For reference, check out the USDA's Food Guide Pyramid for Young Children.
  1. Discuss: Talk about the food pyramid and the five food categories with your children. Together, brainstorm a list of snacks for each category.
  1. Create: Using your list, have children choose food pictures from magazines and cut them out. Help children glue the pictures in the appropriate categories on the pyramid.
Talk About It
Ask: How many do we have in each category? Which category has the most? The least? Which is your favorite? Which foods are new to you?

Take It Further
Provide snacks with sample foods from some of the pyramid categories.
