Everyday Heroes
Recognize the heroes around you

Materials
  • art supplies
  • prize ribbons or stickers (optional)
Directions
Help your children understand what a hero is, and let them create awards for the heroes in their lives.
  1. Discuss heroism: We can all name famous heroes, but there are many unrecognized everyday heroes. Explain that a hero is someone who is kind, helpful, and brave. Tell your children about some of the everyday heroes in your life (including them!). Ask them to tell you about something heroic that they, or people they know, have done.
  1. Make awards: Ask your children to draw and dictate hero awards for someone in their lives. Encourage older kids to read their own award messages aloud with you as you point to each word. You may want to decorate each award with a prize ribbon or sticker. Ask your children if they'd like to present the awards to their everyday heroes.
Take It Further
Give a weekly award that recognizes one or more of your children as an everyday hero. (Be sure all children receive an award.)
