Counting Votes
Tally votes for veggies
Materials
- counters (large beads, bottle caps, etc.)
- cups
- marker
- paper (large sheet)
Directions
Enjoy this voting and counting activity with a group of children.
- Discuss: Talk with children about vegetables, and about what can be made from them (like potato chips!).
- Brainstorm: Together, create a list of vegetables on a large sheet of paper. (You can add simple sketches for nonreaders.)
- Vote: Have children practice counting by voting for their favorite vegetables. Give each child a cup and enough counters to represent the whole group. Run down the list and have kids vote for each vegetable by raising their hands. At each vote, children place one counter in their cups for every hand raised, and then empty their cups for the next veggie vote. Write the number of votes next to each vegetable on the list.
Take It Further
Some potato chips are green because the potatoes were immature when harvested, or the soil did not cover the potato. Have your children draw pictures of their own theories of why green potato chips exist, then write or dictate their explanations.
