Arthur and D.W. Clean Up
1, 2, 3...Lift!
Experiment with some heavy lifting

Materials
  • baking soda
  • heavy objects (books, blocks, etc.)
  • laundry basket
  • raisins
  • spoon
  • tall, clear container
  • vinegar
  • water
Directions
Invite your children to observe a funky science experiment and relate it to their own activities.
  1. Lift: Arthur's father says, "Many hands make light work." Invite your children to test this theory. Fill a laundry basket with heavy objects, such as blocks or books. Have a child try to lift the basket alone. Then work to lift the basket together. How much easier is it?
  1. Observe: Perform this experiment as your children watch: Fill a tall container with water and add 2-3 spoonfuls of vinegar. Stir, and then add two or three raisins. Add a spoonful of baking soda. Don't stir. Watch the raisins rise as bubbles cling to their sides. Once a raisin rises to the surface, the bubbles will pop and the raisin will sink, only to float to the top again when enough bubbles have collected on its surface. Ask your children: Does the raisin float when only one bubble is stuck to it? What happens when many bubbles try to "lift" the raisin? How is this like what we did with the basket?
