Being a sympathetic listener can help lighten your child's worries. Invite your child to put building blocks in a stack. Each block represents a worry. Ask your child to name the worries as he or she builds the stack. Then, break the worry stack down. This time each block will represent something your child can do to ease the stress and feel better. For example, if your family has experienced a weather event, you could say, "I am going to learn more facts about thunderstorms so I'll know what to expect if it happens again."
