Trinidad

steel drumThe steel drum is a percussion instrument made from the steel top of a large oil drum. The steel top is hammered down to create a big "bowl." Then bumps (that stick up) are added. (The bigger the bump, the lower the note.) The steel drum is played with mallets. It was developed in Trinidad in the 1930s and '40s, and is usually played in groups as part of a steel band.
