Thanks for sending in those questions!

We sent them to Uganda. You can read the answers below.

Mengo Senior School Students
Dennis Kakembo

We had lots of great questions, so many that we couldn't answer them all. But Senior School students Nicholas Caesar Mukaaya and Diana Namubiru answered as many as they could. Questions are in blue and answers are in purple.

Many children like Mbiira in Massachusetes, Dan in New York, Xavier in New Jersey, and Dianne in Calgary, Canada were curious about school in Kampala. Belinda from North Carolina wanted to know this:

What do you study on school? What do you like the most?

The School is divided into 3 sections i.e Lower school, Middle school (Ordinary level) and Upper schools (Advanced Level). Ordinary level has 2 Sections while Advanced level has 1 Section; They do vary in the subjects studied.

  • In Ordinary Level (S.1 - S.4), the subjects studied are:

Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Woodwork, Technical Drawing, English language, Fine Art, Metal work, Foods and Nutrition, Clothings and Textiles, German Language, Luganda, Power and Energy, Christian Religious Education, Literature in English, Music, Political Education, Agriculture, Geography, History.

  • In S.3-S.4, students select 9 or 10 subjects which they sit for their Ordinary Level examinations. There are two compulsory subjects i.e Maths and English. The students do make a choice from the rest of the subjects depending on whether they want to specialize in Arts or Sciences.

  • In Advanced Level that is S.5 - S.6, the subjects studied are divided into:

  • Arts and Sciences, Arts, History, Geography, Economics, Divinity(Christian Religious Education), Literature in English, Sciences, Maths, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Technical Drawing, Subsidiary Maths.

  • Subjects that are optional and can be offered under both Arts and Sciences are:

    Fine Art, German Language, Luganda.

  • In Ordinary Level, the most loved subject is English language while in Advanced Level, the most loved subject is Maths for the Science class and Divinity(C.R.E.) for the Arts class.
All kids like to have a good time, and many like Sara in South Dakota, wanted to know what the kids at the Mengo School do for fun, such as sports and leisure activities. Anthony in Arizona also wanted to know about snacks:

What do you do for fun? I go to the park with my family. What is your favorite food? I like chips.
For Leisure, we have a number of activities in sports, music, dance and drama, computer club activities and we also get to interact with each other. As for me, I enjoy Internet Surfing mostly in my free time.
Food and fun seemed to be on many minds, like Marissa in Illinois, and Sonya in Florida who asked:

What is your favorite snack food and activity?
In our School Cafeteria, food is served. On the menu, we have beans, peas, ground nuts, meat served with rice, sweet potatoes, posho, cassava, and sweet bananas to accompany the food served.

As for the snacks, we have a School Canteen where we buy samosas, chapatis, doughnuts, cakes, chaps, meat sandwiches, popcorns, chips, pancakes, cookies, sweets, chewing gum and boiled eggs. For soft drinks we can buy both Coca cola and Pepsi cola products. My best food is Chicken and Chips.
Jennifer in Louisiana wanted to know about the Kabaka:

What is the name of your king? We would like to see what your king looks like. Do you have any questions for us? What is the name of the language you speak? On a normal school day, what are the names of the foods you eat in the school's cafeteria?
We have a King known as Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, a Queen known as Nabagereka Sylvia Nagginda and a young Princess known as Omumbejja Sarah Katrina. You requested for a picture of our King. Check any search engine for Buganda kingdom and you will see his picture and the history of the kingdom.
Denise in Michigan wanted to know about language:

What language do you speak? Do you have a song that you could send us in your language that we could sing?

We speak Luganda as the local language although there are other languages spoken in Uganda. To hear music in Luganda, go to the Africa site for grownups, look in Explore the Regions for Great Lakes.
Many children outside of Africa think of it as a hot place, so we had lots of questions like the ones from Charnelle in Canada, and Marcelle in California about the weather. But Emma in Tasmania, Australia had lived in Africa and wanted to ask this question:

I used to live in Harare The capital of Zimbabwe it got really hot, like up to 45 degrees. How hot does it get there?
The climate in Uganda, is not as hot as that in Harare. We do experience temperatures of an average of 24 degrees centigrade and we do receive a lot of rainfall. Right now in Kampala,we are in a rainy season so the effect of the sun's heat is minimal.
Tahirih from Alaska wanted to know what's next:

What will some of you do after your finished with school?
As for me (Mukaaya Nicholas) in my case, When I finish school,I have plans of working as A Sales Assistant for a Cellular Phone Company.
