Cannon Kituri School By Jane Mjomba
We had lots of great questions, so many that we couldn't answer them all. But, the kids in Kenya answered as many as they could. Questions are in blue and answers are in purple.

Many kids were very curious about life at Cannon Kituri. Alicia in Michigan, Eshella in Texas, Belinda in North Carolina, and Veronique in the Bahamas wanted to know everything from what subjects are studied, to how long the day is. Here's one from Michelle in Southfield, Michigan:
Hi. In the USA, we have 7 subjects in school and only go to school from 8:00
am to 2:00 pm. How many subjects do you-all have and how long do you stay in
school?
We have twelve subjects in the forms 1 and 2 (grades 9 &10) and a minimum of seven in forms three and four (grades 11 &12). The subjects are put in groups.
- Group 1. Mathematics, English and Kiswahili.
- Group 2. Biology, Physics and chemistry.

Form 3 & 4 syllabus is composed as follows:

All group one subjects, the best 2 in group group 2, one in group three, and the best among any others done. Our lessons start at 8.00 am and end at 4.00 pm.
Jessica in Ohio wanted to know:
Do you have English class?
We have english class everyday
There were a great number of questions like the ones from Karen and Karla in Texas, and Palia in California, and Kayleigh in Washington, about how hot
it gets in Kenya, and what kinds of animals you have in your vicinity, like
this one from Erin in Texas:
What is the weather like? And do you see lots of animals and what kind of
animals?
We do not have winter and summer seasons but we have durations of short rains, long rains and dry weather. When it is rainy seasons, at times it gets as cold as 4 degrees celcius. When it is hot in some parts it gets to 35 degrees celcius. Most of the animals are found in the national parks or game reserves. These includes elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, hippos, girraffe, antelopes and gazzels, Warthog, snakes, crocodiles, a variety of birds, and other small insects like butterflies. Others are domestic animals like cattle, pig, goat, sheep, rabbits, guinea pigs.
There were many questions like the ones form Alexis in Minnesota and Danielle
in Pennsylvania, about what Cannon Kituri students and Kenyan kids like to
do for fun, including this one from Dana in Indiana:
Have you ever heard of kickball?
Yes
Everyone wanted to know about what foods you eat, especially when it comes to snack time. Here's what Rachel from Pennsylvania wrote:
Hi my name is Rach and I read your page. It was great! I just wanted to know
what kind of food is made in your country. If you get time please write me
back. Thank you!
The kind of food eaten differs from place to place depending on what is grown in that place. But the most common food is Ugali (Stiff porridge prepared using corn flour), chapati Wheat dough kneeded and made flat then shallow fried), and boiled rice.
From Stephanie in Missouri:
Jambo!! Jambo!! I love Kenya!! I am learning about Kenya. Do you get clear water? Does anybody get sick?
Clear water is gotten from the rivers during the dry season and from the taps(Pipes from springs or rivers which supply treated water). Rain water is also a good supply of clear water in most of the homes. Some people get sick when they drink dirty water.
From Jennifer in Louisiana:
Why don't you have city buses or school buses to take the students who live so faraway to school, and back? How long is your school day? How many
hours? Do you guys ever have time to go swimming at the beach?
There are city buses in big towns like Mombasa and Nairobi. In the rural areas we have MATATUS (small minibuses) which are not frequent. In some places they are there but the students cannot afford to use them on daily basis. So they have to walk to school. Some schools have buses but some do not have. It depends on the financial status of the parents. The schoolday is supposed to be 8 hours but some schools go even up to 11 hours. Those near the beaches go swimming but those far from the beaches don't. Our school is about 200 km from the beach, so we only go there either when we have an organised tour or during the holidays.
Cathirine from Illinois wanted to know all kinds of things:
What are your homes made of?
Most of the homes are made of mud and roofed using iron sheets. Others are made of concrete bricks roofed with tiles or iron sheet. Others are made of cow-dung and roofed using grass or coconut leaves.
What kind of food do you eat?
Ugali, chapati, rice as explained above.
Do you ever see wild animals wandering around your houses?
No, the wild animals are found in the national parks or the game reserves.
Do you own any animals?
We don't. But our parents own cows, goats and sheep.
Is it REALLY hot there?
No, it is not really hot.
Do you like your school?
Very much. Our school being among the best in the district in terms of performance is very likeable.
Do you like where you live?
Yes we do.
Do you know what the city is like?
Yes we do.
Is there a lot of bugs and spiders around your house?
There are not any bugs around our houses. But spiders are there.
And Sharon from St. Louis:
Who won the drama competition and how ?
Our school took position two in the district but Timothy Chovu from our school was the best actor. He is very creative and confident.
We also had several compliments and questions from teachers and parents, like this one form Mrs. Restivo teaching in Kansas:
Dear boys and girls, We are so excited to be studying about Africa, and
especially Kenya! Would you like to know more about our school? We would
love to tell you all about the great state of Kansas. We have grasslands
here, too, but the animals that live on our plains are very different from
yours. We hope we can "talk" to you soon.
Yes, we would like to know more about your school. The daily routine, the subjects offered, the student administration body eg are there students involved in the day today running of the school, What punishment is given to students who do wrong. Please keep in touch.
