It used to be that public schools in the South did not allow
African American kids and white kids to go to school together.
Finally, in May 1954, the Supreme Court ruled that this was not correct. All public schools
had to allow black and white students.
In Little Rock, Arkansas nine African American students were chosen to the attend
Central High, Little Rock's best high school. But many white people did not want
this to happen and they tried to prevent the students from attending classes.
Soldiers had to come to protect the students.
It was a difficult time for these students, who became known as "The Little Rock Nine"
but they did not give up hope.
