After African Americans began to move to the North, New York City's
Harlem became the center of African American life. Artists, musicians,
writers and entertainers from around the country traveled to Harlem to
paint pictures, play jazz music, write novels or poetry and put on shows
that were not like anything that had been seen before. This time is called
the Harlem Renaissance because "renaissance" means "to be born again."
