Many African Americans came to America from West Africa as slaves. In all 13 American colonies, slaves worked on cotton and tobacco plantations, cooked and cleaned for their masters and performed many other important tasks. Their lives were incredibly hard, but they were determined to survive and prosper. Much of American music, food, knowledge of farming and other skills comes from the contributions of these brave people.
